Mother’s Day Tote Bag Relief Printing Workshop with Anna Tararova

Looking for the perfect way to spend Mother’s Day? Why not bring your mom to Zygote and make Tote Bags together! This beginner’s block-printing workshop runs on two consecutive Sundays and truly is for anyone - regardless of your skill level. Participants should come with a design idea for your tote and your Instructor Anna Tararova will show you how to transfer your design to the block, how to carve easy-to-cut linoleum, and how to use a press to make your own tote! Tote bags and supplies included - but if you'd like to print on tees, that’s cool, but please bring your own!

 
 

Protest Printmaking: Block-Printing Propaganda

If you’ve always wanted to try block-printing and are interested in social justice and advocacy, this two-day workshop is perfect for you! Your instructor, tahm lytle (they/them) will start with a brief historical overview of printmaking as activism including an introduction to influential political artists and movement art - then they will explain what makes impactful propaganda, and show examples of common elements and motifs in political art. Participants will design prints up to 8x10" that communicate their beliefs in striking, persuasive ways. Beginner friendly! Your instructor will go over the basics of design for linocut block printing, how to transfer an image, carving and inking techniques, proofing and troubleshooting, and how to hand-print on paper and fabric. They will also touch on different multi-color block printing techniques. Participants will walk away with a completed block and multiple prints and/or patches! All are welcome!

This is our first Pay-What-You-Can Workshop - this new payment model is to give artists with income limitations more equitable access to our shop.

 
 

Screenprinting Basics with Hannah Manocchio

Join Zygote Teaching Artist Hannah Manocchio, owner of the screenprinting business Snakes & Aceys for this introductory screenprinting workshop. She will walk you through the basics – and get you comfortable in Zygote’s screenprinting studio. In this class you will NOT make your own screen, but rather watch as Hannah goes through each of the steps of the screenprinting process - this course is truly for beginners! So even if you’ve never set foot in a print shop, you will enjoy this class. Zine Making with Sequoia Bostick & Andy Passchier

Join award-winning illustrators Sequoia Bostick (she/her) and Andy Passchier (they/them) for this one-day Zine Making workshop! Participants will learn about the political history and origins of zines, then look at actual examples of zines - then the instructors will demonstrate several basic formats to construct a zine. Participants will spend the afternoon concepting, hand drawing, and constructing their own zine from start to finish. Participants are encouraged and welcomed to bring their own ideas to the workshops but it is not necessary, prompts will be available and provided to those who need them. RISO 101 with Elyse Herrera

Learn the basics of Risography on “Lizzo the Rizo”, Zygote’s RZ Risograph machine. Participants will make collages to print with - you can bring your own collage material such as magazines, drawings, and photos. If you need to print something out, be sure to arrive 15 minutes early to use our printer. Each artist will make a two color print using our RZ 390ui Riso Duplicator. They will also learn basic Riso mechanics and skills so they can work independently with Lizzo during Open Studio. No experience required!

 
 

Photopolymer Photogravure with Michael Whitehead

This workshop will guide participants through the process of making their own original Photopolymer Photogravure print. Workshop instruction will include: digital photograph editing/manipulation through photoshop; applying/ modifying correction curves; printing and curing photo-positive transparencies; testing exposure times, exposing and developing photopolymer plates; and printing/editioning photopolymer plates.

Photopolymer Photogravure is an exciting green-printmaking medium which allows artists to create original intaglio prints using digital photographs, photo collages, or hand drawn images. This workshop will focus primarily on photographic imagery but exposures from hand drawn films will be covered in the tutorial. Zygote Press uses Toyobo KM83 plates, which develop in room temperature water, no chemicals!

Participants should bring a digital copy of two photographic images sized to 6"x8" (300ppi is ideal). We request that participants have a rudimentary understanding of photoshop software in order to fully benefit from the workshop.

Using objects, plants, leaves, flowers, lace, and other materials, participants will create their composition, and Lisa will show you how to get the best results using the sun and the darkroom to create luscious blue cyanotype prints. *The date of this workshop might change due to weather - we will let you know earlier that week if it is going to run on that day*

Intermediate RISO with Elyse Herrera

Sunday, August 4 & Sunday, August 11th, 5:30-8:30pm

If you’ve already taken RISO 101, and want to expand your knowledge - this is the course for you! On the first night, Elyse Herrera will teach you advanced file set up, using both Photoshop and Spectrolite. Then participants will have a week to work on their files at home. At the second workshop, participants will make their prints using “Lizzo the Rizo”, Zygote’s RZ 390ui Risograph machine - there will also be plenty of studio time to work on future prints! After completing this workshop, you are certified to work solo at Zygote on the RISO during open studio.

 
 

Intermediate Screenprinting with Paul Serrianne 

Saturday & Sunday, September 7 & 8, 5:30-8:30pm

If you’ve already taken Screenprinting Basics then you’re ready to take Intermediate Screenprinting to be certified to work solo in the shop. This Screenprinting Certification Program was developed to help new members learn how to use the shop independently and correctly use all the equipment. In this two-day course, students will learn some basic file set-up, how to coat screens, burn their design, and make their prints.

Enrollment

If you are interested in a class, don’t wait to sign up! If we do not have enough enrollments, the class will be cancelled and any paid registrations will be refunded. Class enrollment is open to the public, ages 13 and up (unless otherwise specified).

Tuition and fees are due in full upon registration - you can call, mail or sign-up online. We accept cash, checks, or credit card.

Materials

Instructor will notify participants regarding material that may be needed for the class. Some classes will require materials that can be purchased at Zygote.
