Jamye Jamison Artist Talk
As part of the Affordable Print Fair, Zygote is offering a series of free talks for artists and collectors. Jamye Jamison is the owner of Jamison Art Conservation, a paper conservation studio in Cleveland. She regularly lectures and teaches classes for museums, libraries, colleges and artists on a variety of conservation and preservation topics. If you've ever wondered what to look for when you're thinking about buying a print, this talk is for you! It's free and open to the public.

You will learn the basics of setting lead and wood type by hand, and you will master the mechanics of printing on Zygote’s incredible, flexible Vandercook presses. This is a true intensive - two full days of letterpress training! By the end of the workshop, you will be approved to work on your own in Zygote’s letterpress studio. Come prepared with a short text.

Join us for our very first Pay-What-You-Can Family Workshop this Fall! Get an overview of the world of monoprinting with this family-friendly hands-on program. Learn to make your own monoprints using leaves from your neighborhood with Zygote Teaching Artists Sequoia Bostick and Brittany M. Hudak. You will also learn to identify common Ohio tree leaves and leaf terms! For this class participants will make their own Fall cards and envelopes using leaves to take home – and they will also get to make their own monoprint on a table-top etching press!

Todd Masuda + Christy Grey: How to Tackle Large-Scale Commission Work
As part of the Affordable Print Fair, Zygote is offering a series of free talks for artists. Corporate art commissions can offer artists good career and sales opportunities but often come with a significant increase in the costs and risks involved. This presentation will give practical advice for artists on evaluating, bidding, and negotiating corporate commissions. The presenters, Christy Gray and Todd Masuda, are lifelong artists who happen to work on the business side of the fence. Their presentation will be appropriate for artists who are considering pursuing corporate or public art opportunities, gallerists and consultants who advise clients or artists on sales contracts, and, more generally, those interested in the way contracts work in creative businesses. Free and open to the public.

Queer Histories: Zygote Press is presented in honor of LGBT History Month. Celebrated annually in October, History Month coincides with National Coming Out Day (Oct 11) and the first march on Washington for gay rights (1979). The aim of LGBT History Month is to provide role models, build community and honor our extraordinary lineage.
This exhibition also celebrates the history of Zygote Press, a nonprofit community printmaking studio in Cleveland’s vibrant Asiatown neighborhood. For 28 years Zygote has been a safe haven for queer artists, offering support through residency programs, studio access, and artistic development in a collaborative environment open to all. Queer Histories: Zygote Press centers intergenerational queer artists who currently work at Zygote Press, including young emerging artists as well as established artists who have worked in the shop for many years.

The Affordable Print Fair: Collecting 101 Opening Reception
Bringing art to everyone by breaking down barriers is at the core of Zygote’s mission. The Affordable Print Fair: Collecting 101 centers that mission by creating opportunities for emerging artists to exhibit their work, and by offering new collectors an affordable way to acquire art. This exhibition and the accompanying free, public programs demonstrate that print collecting is not just for the rich, but is rather a democratic way of building an art collection that reflects your individual taste, while supporting local artists.
Zygote has a long history of helping artists establish their careers through their residency programs, workshops, and community-centric printmaking studio. The Affordable Print Fair will feature works by emerging Zygote artists Scout Bach, Bee Ferrance, tahm lytle and Michaella DiFiore.
The exhibition will also include back catalog prints, which will be used during the free public programs geared to help budding collectors and emerging artists navigate the print market, and will be available for purchase. Zygote rarely sells prints from their deep backstock, making this a major draw for both new and seasoned art collectors.

Conceived by Cleveland-based artist Jen P. Harris, the exhibition includes drawings and collage-based paintings by Harris alongside paintings, textiles, prints, and sculptures by Ajdin Kulić (Cleveland), E.E. Ikeler (New York), Fidencio Fifield-Perez (Minneapolis), Leeza Meksin (New York), Sarana Mehra (Los Angeles), and R Kauff (Cleveland).
Originally planned as a solo exhibition, Incantations expanded to include six additional artists when Harris partnered with Zygote Press. The diamond-shaped “tiles” in Harris’s paintings are based on the winged beasts and flames of a thirteenth-century apocalypse manuscript, which she painstakingly copies, then cuts up and reconfigures. Motivating this body of work is a series of questions: When you’re living inside one story, how can you see around or beyond it? What patterns lie hidden beneath indoctrinated ideals and conventions? How do received narratives change when viewed through a queer lens? These questions guided the curation of the group show: the exhibiting artists radically transform materials or symbols, often through repetitive, accumulative actions that suggest ritual or spell-casting. Fragmented bodies, plants, and structures recombine into forms that refuse to cohere into expected narratives. Different scenarios come into view.
This project is supported by The Satellite Fund, administered by SPACES and funded by the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts Regional Regranting Program.

Photopolymer Photogravure with Michael Whitehead
Sat & Sunday, July 27 & July 28, 10am-4pm

This workshop will guide participants through the process of making their own original Photopolymer Photogravure print. Workshop instruction will include: digital photograph editing/manipulation through photoshop; applying/ modifying correction curves; printing and curing photo-positive transparencies; testing exposure times, exposing and developing photopolymer plates; and printing/editioning photopolymer plates.
Photopolymer Photogravure is an exciting green-printmaking medium which allows artists to create original intaglio prints using digital photographs, photo collages, or hand drawn images. This workshop will focus primarily on photographic imagery but exposures from hand drawn films will be covered in the tutorial. Zygote Press uses Toyobo KM83 plates, which develop in room temperature water, no chemicals!
Participants should bring a digital copy of two photographic images sized to 6"x8" (300ppi is ideal). We request that participants have a rudimentary understanding of photoshop software in order to fully benefit from the workshop.
