We are so excited to see many of you back and printing in the shop, and we hope to see more of you soon as all of the processes are set up and ready to go!
By attending one of these sessions you will get reacquainted with our brand new studio, learn the location of tools and supplies, and review important safety information as well as standard procedures. No registration is required for these sessions, but please try to arrive 10 minutes before the designated time to check-in with your membership credentials and please bring a notebook and pen to take notes.
Anyone who wants to continue to print in the new space will need to have a new shop orientation with either our Shop Manager Elyse Herrera or our Shop Technician Michaella Difiore. If you are unable to make the scheduled group orientation dates, please reach out to either Elyse (elyseherrera@zygotepress.org) or Michaella (michaella@zygotepress.org) to set up an orientation that aligns with your availability.

Poetry and Letterpress Intensive
Join artist, writer, and printmaker RA Washington for a six-hour immersive workshop exploring the relationship between poetry and letterpress. Open to writers, artists, and printmakers of all experience levels. In this workshop, RA invites participants to consider language as both a literary and material practice—and to consider the letterpress as an extension of the writing process itself. Through writing exercises, group discussions, and hands-on instruction in handset type and letterpress printing, participants will compose original poems while experimenting with scale, spacing, ink, and impression. Participants will leave with a deeper understanding of the relationship between text and form, along with an original letterpress broadside that reflects their own voice and creative inquiry. No previous experience with poetry or letterpress is necessary.

Monoprinting with Gelatin Plates
In this one-day workshop, students will learn gelatin plate printing with Zygote teaching artist Wendy Partridge. The beauty of gelatin plate printing is its speed and spontaneity, simple set up (no press required), and easy clean-up with water-based printing inks. Participants will play with various textures, stencils, and reference images to create a beautiful and surprising series of prints. By the end of the session, participants will have gained a basic understanding of the gelatin plate print process and be ready to continue experimenting on their own. This workshop is suitable for beginners as an introduction to printing, and advanced printmakers as a quick way to generate images and add layers.

Woodcut Posters With Claudio Orso Part I
DAY 1 OF 2 - MUST BE AVAILABLE BOTH DAYS
Saturday, October 10, 2026 and Saturday, October 17, 2026
Join woodcut artist Claudio Orso for a 2 day intensive woodcut workshop where participants will learn the fundamentals of woodcut printmaking and explore intuitive mark making. Claudio is known for his large scale, one color woodblock prints that utilize shapes and patterns to create beautiful works of art. In this workshop, participants will carve and print a poster-size, single-color woodcut block over the course of one week.On workshop day one, participants will learn how to properly carve on test blocks and then transfer their designs onto a large scale block. Participants will then bring their block and tools home in order to finish carving their design by the following Saturday. On workshop day two, participants will print their blocks both by hand and on a press.
*All needed supplies for this workshop will be provided by Zygote. Students will get to keep woodcarving tools for their own future use. (approx $50 value)

Woodcut Posters With Claudio Orso Part II

Zygote Press & The Splice Cream Truck Present: A Clearing: Music, Voice, and Conversation
Splice-Cream Truck Mobile Listening & Conversation Event
Join Zygote Press and artist Benjamin Smith for a free, open-to-the-public immersive extension of Zygote’s latest exhibition, A Clearing: Word, Image, Body.
For a decade, multimedia artist and truck owner Ben Smith has been using analog recording equipment in a refurbished ice cream truck to record community member’s stories from around Cleveland. He will be bringing the Splice-Cream truck to Zygote Press for a one-of-a-kind exhibit and immersive experience on wheels. As an extension of Zygote Press's exhibition, A Clearing: Word, Image, Body, the Splice-Cream Truck becomes a clearing in motion: taking the exhibition's questions, music, and voices beyond the gallery and into different locations across Cleveland. The truck and seating area will be themed around the concept of a clearing in the woods, designed to be both physically and mentally engaging. Artwork, music, and voices recorded by Ben for several of his projects will be on display and there will be space to gather, share, and enjoy good company.
Come experience the Toni Morrison’s clearing in a new way, immerse yourself in art and music, and enjoy sharing stories and experiences with your community. We can’t wait to see you there!

A Clearing: Word, Image, Body Exhibition FINAL DAY

Artists: Tatyana Atkinson, Marcus Morris, Euzhan Shabazz, Benjamin Smith, and solo.
Description: This exhibition is a response to the wide-ranging impact of Lorain, Ohio native Toni Morrison. Nearly 100 years since her birth, how are Ohio contemporary artists giving visual expression to the themes Morrison investigated?
Through a range of media spanning photography, digital collage and illustration, printmaking, sound, installation, and social practice, these five multidisciplinary artists build on Morrison's legacy, their practices making room for what has been obscured, constrained, or denied. Collectively, their works explore identity, memory, and ancestry; Black selfhood and autonomy; liberation from societal norms and values; beauty; sexual violence and trauma; and Black communal life, love, and joy as forms of authorship and world-making. This presentation illustrates how visual artists translate Morrison’s modes of storytelling and literary effects into visual and material terms that enrich the characters and meanings found in her oeuvre.
Taking its inspiration from the notion of a clearing — a space for the practice of liberation — as depicted in the novel Beloved (1987), the exhibition invites visitors to think expansively about how art might perform a similar function. Morrison's clearing is not entirely removed from the conditions that surround it, but one made within them: a space in which other ways of being, relating, and imagining become possible. As such, what happens when we apply this idea to the physical substrates and mental spaces of art-making? In this group exhibition, photographic parcels of land, printerly plots of real estate, installation grounds, and sonic landscapes offer alternative realities that transport readers, viewers, and listeners to spaces of inclusivity, love, and liberation. It is through inhabiting such spaces — however provisional — that different possibilities for selfhood, relation, and collective life can be practiced.
Exhibition-related public programs will be announced soo. Participating artists were selected through a statewide, open-call process that involved a jury of professionals from the fields of the visual and literary arts. To read more about the jurors and this process, click here.

Recycled Tetra-Pak Printing With Lisa Schonberg
Come explore the art of “Tetra Pak” printing with Lisa Schonberg. Using the inside surface of soup/beverage boxed containers as printing plates. By manipulating the silver-like surface, participants will draw, scratch, collage with stickers and tape, sand and even cut the plates easily into desired shapes. Each participant will create at least one plate and have time to print it several times using intaglio printing techniques and the etching presses. No experience necessary just the desire to do something new, fun, and eco-friendly!

This class is designed to follow our Intro to Screenprint course offered in November; however, it is available to anyone with a basic knowledge of screenprint who wants to hone their skills and gain knowledge about alternative methods of printing. Teaching Artist Paul Serrianne will guide students through different techniques specific to the screenprinting process and will work with them to create a unique set of prints.

City & the City : Experimental Risograph Cartographies With Tony Yanik
What happens when one city occupies the same page as another? Using a shared map of Cleveland as a starting point, participants will cut, distort, layer, erase, overprint, and misregister the city into multiple simultaneous versions: the given, the felt, the haunted, and the possible. This hands-on workshop treats the risograph as more than a reproduction machine. Through transparent inks, color separation, handmade textures, double printing, intentional drift, and variable editions, participants will explore how Riso’s quirks can become tools for mapping memory, emotion, absence, and imagined futures. No printmaking or cartography experience is required. Participants will leave with a small edition of experimental prints—and several new ways of thinking about what a map, a city, and a risograph can do.

Join Zygote’s staff and intern team as we prepare to wrap lots of prints as gifts this year at this PAY-WHAT-YOU-CAN AND OPEN TO THE COMMUNITY event. Choose from multiple designs created by Zygote staff and print your own sheets of wrapping paper! There will be screen printing and relief printing stations set up around Zygote’s print shop for you to visit and print your own winter themed wrapping paper. There will also be a station for making gift tags with rubber stamps, markers and more.

Join us at Zygote Press for a guided open studio session which will explore how the core aspects of printmaking fittingly embody some of the emotions and visual language that Morrison uses in her novels. This PAY-WHAT-YOU-CAN AND OPEN TO THE COMMUNITY guided studio is for artists from any discipline, as well as anyone who wants to explore the world of book arts, poetry and printmaking. Join us for a day of connection and creativity. Participants can make a hand-made journal using our Chandler and Price platen press and print a quote by Toni Morrison. Customize your very own zine that will help guide you through our current exhibition and print a Morrison themed letterpress poster to take home. Explore printmaking methods, make new friends, and take home a hand-bound journal for your own writings. Appropriate for art adventurers of all levels. Artists: Tatyana Atkinson, Marcus Morris, Euzhan Shabazz, Benjamin Smith, and solo.
Description: This exhibition is a response to the wide-ranging impact of Lorain, Ohio native Toni Morrison. Nearly 100 years since her birth, how are Ohio contemporary artists giving visual expression to the themes Morrison investigated?
Through a range of media spanning photography, digital collage and illustration, printmaking, sound, installation, and social practice, these five multidisciplinary artists build on Morrison's legacy, their practices making room for what has been obscured, constrained, or denied. Collectively, their works explore identity, memory, and ancestry; Black selfhood and autonomy; liberation from societal norms and values; beauty; sexual violence and trauma; and Black communal life, love, and joy as forms of authorship and world-making. This presentation illustrates how visual artists translate Morrison’s modes of storytelling and literary effects into visual and material terms that enrich the characters and meanings found in her oeuvre.
Taking its inspiration from the notion of a clearing — a space for the practice of liberation — as depicted in the novel Beloved (1987), the exhibition invites visitors to think expansively about how art might perform a similar function. Morrison's clearing is not entirely removed from the conditions that surround it, but one made within them: a space in which other ways of being, relating, and imagining become possible. As such, what happens when we apply this idea to the physical substrates and mental spaces of art-making? In this group exhibition, photographic parcels of land, printerly plots of real estate, installation grounds, and sonic landscapes offer alternative realities that transport readers, viewers, and listeners to spaces of inclusivity, love, and liberation. It is through inhabiting such spaces — however provisional — that different possibilities for selfhood, relation, and collective life can be practiced.

The exhibition opening is jointly presented by Zygote Press and Literary Cleveland, and serves as the welcoming reception for writers attending the annual Inkubator Writing Conference. The 2026 theme of the conference, “Freedom is community,” stems from Colson Whitehead’s The Underground Railroad and amplifies some of Toni Morrison’s own thoughts about power, autonomy, and liberation–all themes found throughout the exhibition. The reception is free and open to the public, but registration is required. RSVP here.

During Open Studios, there are printmaking monitors on site to oversee the shop and answer questions. Please note that the Open Studio is not a class, it is a session designed for artists working independently on small projects.
If you need more time than is provided in Open Studio, please consider becoming an artist renter, which provides 24-hour access to the shop.
Color Theory and Printmaking
Color theory is a very important skill for all artists to have, but especially for printmakers. Join Program Manager Chandler Mack and Teaching Artist Josie Krampitz for this 1 day workshop in which we will be exploring color theory as it applies to printmaking. Learn how to mix inks, layer transparent colors, and take your prints from good to great. This workshop will use pre-made designs that you can print using the custom colors you create. Students will walk away from this workshop with a new understanding of color theory and confidence they need to mix inks and create complex colors.

By attending one of these sessions you will get reacquainted with our brand new studio, learn the location of tools and supplies, and review important safety information as well as standard procedures. No registration is required for these sessions, but please try to arrive 10 minutes before the designated time to check-in with your membership credentials and please bring a notebook and pen to take notes.
Anyone who wants to continue to print in the new space will need to have a new shop orientation with either our Shop Manager Elyse Herrera or our Shop Technician Michaella Difiore. If you are unable to make the scheduled group orientation dates, please reach out to either Elyse (elyseherrera@zygotepress.org) or Michaella (michaella@zygotepress.org) to set up an orientation that aligns with your availability.

Screen Printing A to Z
Back by popular demand, Zygote is offering a 6-week deep dive evening course! Teaching artist, Anna Tararova will take you through everything you need to know about screenprinting. Starting with the basics you will learn a solid foundation of skills that will help guide you in the coming weeks. You will learn about printing multiple layers, paper and fabric applications, and digital components that can go hand in hand with screenprinting. By the end of this 6-week course students will be able to create at least one screenprinting project from conception to completion. No previous experience necessary.
