The artists in the IN-Turn show share an onus for making things. When so much of emerging art today is caught between the ready-made and the never-made the participating artists have a genuine interest in making original objects. In the work I have chosen, I see a process of recalling through material investigations. For this region, physical space is transient, economies are shifting, and ideas of vacancy and emblem are shaped by what Cleveland used to be. For these artists there is an impulse to make things that stay.The represented organizations are all workshops in town, Zygote Press, Morgan Conservatory, and Praxis Fiber Workshop. These art non-profits rely on intern labor to remain open and accessible to the public. In exchange for monitoring an open studio, or helping to hang a show, the artists are provided the tools and space necessary to hone their practice. There is an irony to artists professionalizing their practices in the context of unpaid work, but this work-exchange economy is robust in Cleveland.Participating Artists:

Frances Lee is an artist working in fiber and paint. In her work she is interested in the formation and function of ideologies of citizenship. She earned a BA at Oberlin and is currently an MFA Candidate at the University of Chicago. Frances is founder and director of Carus Art Space in Cleveland Heights, Ohio. She’s been an intern at SPACES, Zygote Press, and MOCA.

The Rasmuson Artist Residency Exchange Exhibition at Zygote Press

Artist Sara Tabbert, of Fairbanks Alaska, has been in Cleveland this summer, printing woodcuts of both foreign and familiar landscapes and environments around her. The project is part of his summer residency at Zygote Press, through the Rasmuson Foundation Resident Exchange program. The program provides for one artist each from Alaska and Ohio to visit the other state and make art there. We also include the work of Cleveland exchange residents, Elizabeth Emery and Amy Casey and Michael Walsh of Homer, AK.

Zygote Press RE/UNITE marks the press’s 20th anniversary and features prints by over 25 of the regions most acclaimed artists.  Some, such as Gloria Plevin, Margaret Yuko Kimura, Michael Loderstedt, have returned to the press throughout their careers; others, including Michaelangelo Lovelace, Amy Casey and, countless other national and internationally known resident artists, are more recent additions to the roster. All share an enthusiasm for expanding their artistic practice by making prints.

When the four founders established Zygote Press in the Saint Clair Superior neighborhood, they expressed a commitment to creating a space where a community of makers could work together and collaborate that was remarkable for the time. Most workshop-based ventures were not part of the city’s fabric at that time. Zygote offered an alternative and welcomed artists who were new to print the opportunity to explore an alternative studio practice that gave possibility to both newcomers and seasoned printmakers.

Witnessing the evolution of artistic movements happening in Cleveland the press has applied a constant level of innovation to the region’s contemporary art scene while working with visiting artists, regardless of style, to realize complex ideas. From the late 1990s, Zygote and their team of staff members, printers and artist residents have developed ways in which projects can evolve and prosper.

Fandom 216: The Art of Sports in NE Ohio

The exhibition will present the broadest conceptual responses related to the intersecting theme of sports and art, and will include a diverse range of approaches and media. In addition to the “big three” of baseball, football & basketball, Fandom 216 will also examine regional auto racing, our burgeoning urban bicycle culture, skateboard culture, amateur woman’s rugby, running and other sports. This wide-ranging exhibition will coincide with Super Bowl 50, itself a milestone as the ultimate national sports spectacle.
