Woodcut Reduction Two-Day Workshop with Michael Whitehead

This workshop serves as an introduction to the process of woodcut reduction printing. The reduction process uses only one block for all the colors in a design by layering the inks, from light to dark. Between each layer, the printing surface of the block is carved, reducing the surface. Removing previously printed areas of the surface allows for the preservation of previous colors and creates a new color layer. dOver the course of two sessions, participants will learn about historical applications of multi-color woodcut printing, gain an understanding of proper care for woodcut tools and create an original multi-color woodcut print.
